One of the most pressing challenges in contemporary HR practice is the quality of talent entering the workforce. Serving as an invited discussant at the cross-sector Academic & Industry Edge Workshop, we explored the critical threshold where university education ends and corporate reality begins.
01. The Challenge
There is a growing, palpable gap between the theoretical knowledge imparted by academic institutions and the agile, practical competencies demanded by modern industries. Employers are struggling to find "plug-and-play" talent, while graduates find themselves unprepared for the fast pace of the contemporary workplace.
"The future of work does not wait for the curriculum to catch up. Industry and academia must co-create the modern workforce.
02. The Approach
Competency Mapping
Identifying the critical soft skills—like adaptability and critical thinking—lacking in fresh graduates.
Cross-Sector Dialogue
Facilitating a shared understanding between university lecturers and corporate hiring managers.
Drawing on extensive dual experience in academic advisory and corporate HR consultancy, we identified the specific soft and hard skills missing from current curricula. The discourse provided a balanced, two-way critique: challenging academic institutions to modernise their teaching while advising industry leaders on building robust onboarding and continuous learning pipelines.
03. The Results
-
Provided clear foresight into future-of-work competencies required for the next decade.
-
Fostered actionable dialogue between academic curriculum developers and corporate leaders.
-
Outlined a blueprint for industries to bridge the gap via internal HR development programs.
